I write many times to heal my self, my soul. My Mom passed away on June 30th and it has been a very painful process, grief as it is called. I call it gut-wrenching. I have never experienced this type of pain before even when my Dad died and I thought that was the most painful experience to date. But losing you mother is somehow different. The feelings run very deep. I loved my mother dearly and miss her everyday, sometimes every moment. I am taking full advantage of the services that the VNA Hospice Team provides after death. I meet with my grief counselor that they provide every other week for two hours. She is a blessing. A very spiritual woman who is helping me cope with this process. She says that I have to grieve, have to feel, have to cry, have to do all these things that I don't like doing. I am one that in the past has run from myself and my feelings, lived in a fantasy world most of my life. That was my coping mechanism and I had thought it worked but I was fooling myself.
Last year, I had a revelation during a most difficult time in my life and realized I was throwing away a precious gift, me. So I changed. I changed everything in my life - my job, where I lived, I went back to my husband, a man who I loved dearly but ran from to live that exciting bullshit life in NYC, my friends, me. Emerged was a happier person and a person who could give love unselfishly, unconditionally to and for my dieing mother. I am grateful that I had this awakening and being me, the real me isn't so bad, she's actually pretty awesome!
Even through all this pain, I have gratitude. Gratitude for having the opportunity to spend the last year of my mother's life with her. And as I have told you time and again, we had so much fun. There was so much love, laughter, tears and fun and I hold those memories close to my heart.
Tomorrow is my birthday. This is the first time in my life that my Mom, the person who gave me life, is not here. It is a cold, lonely feeling. I know that I must go through these feelings and not "stuff" them. Every year since leaving the home that I grew up in at 17, my mother has left me a "birthday message" at the exact time that I was born 5:52P. It was always the same and I know it by heart. I would make her leave it on my answering machine vs directly to me so that I could listen to it a few times. Then I would call her and she would recite it again.
It goes like this....
"It's August 10th. AT 5:52 a beeeauuutiful baby came into this world. We named her Nancy, and she was so precious to us. Her father and I were so proud of her and loved her so very much. As she grew up, she became a beautiful woman who has done so many great things in her life and we are very proud of her. Happy Birthday Honey, I love you."
I love you Mom.
